What Are The STREAM And STEM Gifts For Kids?

A new way of calling science and technology games has arisen, STEM Toys and STREAM Toys. Both refer to the same, but one is the evolution of the other much more inclusive. Continue reading to discover how STEM gifts for kids boost their interest  for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

What does STEM and STREAM mean?

Both words are acronyms, that is, initials of other words. In the first case, STEM comes from Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STREAM is the new generation, the evolution of STEM toys. STREAM stands for Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, Arts and Music. That is, they have included other branches of games. It must be said that some change the "R" of Robotics by the "R" of Reading. Both options are equally great.

Difference between STEM and STREAM toys

We will use the terms STEM and STREAM interchangeably, that is, without differentiating them. Both terms refer to the same types of educational games for girls and boys. The only thing that separates them is that one is more inclusive in terms of conditions, but the intention that was had when creating them was the same: include genuinely educational games under one roof.

This type of toys has several objectives: to awaken interest in science, learn new arts, develop mental and motor skills. But all are sheltered under the same roof: playing can be didactic. So let's review everything that these STEM games bring to small scientists.

  • Creativity: Developing creative thinking at an early age is essential so that, in the long run, it is easier for them to understand the world, solve problems and generate ideas for daily life.
  • Curiosity: An essential skill so that life is not dull and monotonous. It is one of the best capabilities that a person can have; curiosity moves the world.
  • Problem-solving: These games require the use of the intellect to solve the problems they pose. This helps to have a better capacity to make decisions.
  • Concentration: The games need attention to play. Therefore, it is good that they use these toys designed to develop this important capacity (and that television is responsible for snatching us).
  • Logical-mathematical reasoning: Free creativity is as important as the structuring and organization of ideas generated and thoughts. This structuring will allow you to reach conclusions quickly.
  • Exploration of new stimuli and activities: There is a wide variety of STREAM games so you can try several things and explore what you like most and what you want.
  • Adaptation to emerging technologies: Free creativity is as essential as the structuring and organization of ideas generated and thoughts. This structuring will allow you to reach conclusions quickly.

Do STEM toys really and scientifically work?

There are many opinions on whether it works or does not work. There are very different scientific studies that do not reach a definitive conclusion. What is certain is that some can improve learning more than others, but it is not the norm. To all this, what the scientists say is that we must not lose sight of the objective of any toy, fun.

It is not essential to force children to play something that you think will be good, let him play with whatever he wants (within limits), that is what will make him happy and motivate him. Many times less is more, that is, a simple toy can awaken creativity more than an educational toy with a billion benefits (according to its salesperson).

STEM education is also possible

The new school projects are beginning to integrate the science kits for kids into the classes. This requires new ways of teaching, innovative methods based on projects, laboratory practices and the use of new technologies. One of the first to be successfully implemented is robotics, whose process requires the development of all the skills mentioned above: patience, concentration, curiosity, creativity, reasoning ... Likewise, the STREAM methodology would also include the development of artistic skills, both of painting, theater, corporal expression as well as musical talent.
